On September 20, 2024, Chris was hosting a dinner at his home for a group of fellow Christians before the group went swing dancing. Sam, as one of the first arrivals, attended the dinner at Chris's home and later became acquainted with Chris at Lake Robbins Ballroom. The two danced most of the night together and discussed very light topics like free will and predestination. Toward the end of the night, Chris told Sam about the dinner he hosted prior to the dance. He explained he made a lot of food and had leftovers, so he invited Sam (and others) to come to his home to pick up some leftovers. Little did Chris know, Sam had come to his home and had dinner earlier in the evening. Yet, Sam did not tell Chris that she had been to his home already. When Sam and some friends went to Chris's home for leftovers, Chris realized Sam had been there earlier.

About a week after this encounter, Sam and Chris both attended a fall conference for a college church group and were excited to see each other because they didn't know the other was coming. They talked throughout the conference and continued to get to know each other over the next few months.

Chris and Sam traveled to India at the end of December 2024 to visit Chris's family. On January 10, 2025, Chris proposed to Sam in India.
